and I've been doing some work on my photos and this website. Not much on this website yet; but I've now completely segregated the original Weebly site into three distinct and separate ones.
Thus, I now have: arcmwriting.weebly.com arcmphotography.weebly.com undertow-music.weebly.com My first site - the writing one - has now been updated and streamlined. And, although both of the others are mentioned in passing on that main one; the pages dedicated to music and photos have been removed so that, should anyone want too, they can click to one of these more focused sites. I am obviously still taking photographs and hope to have a new project underway soon with two of my erstwhile colleagues from ACL Maldon. Pip came up with the idea of us having an objective set for us each month and then taking images with reference to that objective and meeting up to go through photos and discuss them over tea and (hopefully) cake! I think its a great idea and have suggested an easy one for the first topic - Light. An 'easy' subject and one that can be interpreted in many ways. I'm hoping i'll be able to get out and take some good photos on my 'pre-enjoyed' Canon EOS 5D MKIII when Laura goes back to school. Even if the others don't want to take up the challenge, I might do it just for the fun of it! I'm still taking photos regularly; and was actually asked to take some images for an Awards Ceremony last month. It was an interesting challenge and a real learning curve. It was an evening of running around, swapping between cameras and getting people to pose for a few photos before they rushed back to their seat. Although I took more than one camera, I couldn't be in two places at once and even though I'd asked for a 'brief' from the person running the event; the images that I got were not completely to their satisfaction. I found this an interesting - though confidence sapping - result. My 'style' is ad-hoc, unplanned, in-the-moment and although I had a series of posed photos (shaking hands and award on show between the two people concerned); my 'realistic' approach did not please as much as it might have and certainly not as I hoped it would. The lighting was very difficult to overcome as there were several sets of lights in the room and I tried to go for a neutral balance in the images so that they did not turn out yellow. This worked quite well, the photos I got were fairly good (although a few were not as sharp as they should have been), and out of a pool of several hundred, I selected about 100 for a slideshow as per the request from the event organiser. Even this did not please and I had to re-cut it and alter it to show some photos for longer. A valuable lesson was learned here; parties and weddings are all about the moment and although so are Awards evenings (and I did one for the School earlier this year which was well received); on this occasion my style was too free and more posed photographs were the requirement. Something to think of next time. If there ever is a next time.... Anyway, I analysed my work, saw where I could sharpen up my technique and approach in more situations and feel that, as a result of this, I can evolve from it and take note of what to do (and not do) in the future. Everything is about becoming better; as good as you can get (even if that is not as good as many others). Stay safe all, keep taking them photos... A R C

Alan MitchellI'm always trying to capture that fleeting 'moment' in time -whether by taking a photo or writing a poem. My attempts to capture that illusive feeling, sight, sensation or sound in some way is, to me, magical. Archives
