This week as a class we were meant to be going out on a field trip somewhere. It didn't happen so it was into the classroom setting again for some academic work. There has been some change too in regard to the handing in of our Unit Two documents.
They were scheduled to be handed in our first week back after Christmas (3rd January), but our glorious leader Richard has extended this until the 10th. You won't be surprised to hear that I should be ready for the 3rd without too much of an issue, but I know it will benefit some of the class so it is well worth doing it. I forgot to mention in an earlier post that we have been doing some work on other areas of 'Visual Language'. The elements that we have reviewed - and which will be interesting to utilise for our Unit Three Portfolio, are the rule of thirds, leading lines, framing, viewpoint, perspective, s-curves, depth of field and motion blur. So we have been out taking images that provide examples of these. As I have no field trip photos to share, here instead is one from that set - can you guess which one I mean it to be for I wonder....

Starting Unit Two is always entertaining for anyone engaged in an academic course, and this one is no exception. I like the anticipation, the discovery, of new areas and people that I've not encountered before.
A good academic course is full of these things; each new session brings with it new ideas and possibilities and this is compounded when you have the satisfaction of completing one section and are able to move onto the next one. The first Unit (the entertainingly termed Unit One has now finished and we are moving onto the second one which is almost half the number of sessions! Unit One started in September and was a fine mix of Lightroom and practical photography skills. Unit Two looks to be a bit different. The Workbook element is obviously similar to the previous one but there is a different second part to it - a Magazine Article. This is a 'spoof' piece that is set in three sections; giving the student the widest possible ways to interpret the brief and I've already got a framework in my mind for my piece. I'm going to call the periodical for the article 'Photofocus' and I'm going to create the article and then two further sections for the more academic portions of the piece. This will give me the scope to explore my three photographers in some detail, but I am acutely aware that I could let this small piece become too large; to make it far (far) longer than might be relevant to the level of the course. So, my three photographers are Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Mapplethorpe and Bill Brandt. Three disparate personalities and viewpoints; but three great photographer - pathfinders even - in their own way. I hope that I can do them justice. So, stay safe all, until the next time keep taking the photos... Alan |
Alan MitchellI'm always trying to capture that fleeting 'moment' in time -whether by taking a photo or writing a poem. My attempts to capture that illusive feeling, sight, sensation or sound in some way is, to me, magical. Archives
